What happened on Friday
Kompany, 40, was watching a training session of Bayern's reserve team on Friday when he collapsed. He received medical treatment and was taken to hospital in Munich, the club said in a statement.
The news spread quickly because Bayern are top of the Bundesliga and had just drawn 2–2 with Arsenal in the Champions League in midweek, with Kompany on the touchline.
How is he now?
On Saturday, Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl gave the first detailed update. "The good news is he's stable," Eberl said, adding that he had spoken to Kompany and his wife.
Eberl was clear that the absence will not be short: "We're not talking about days, but weeks." He said Kompany "will be given all the time he needs" and should only come back when he is fully fit.
Was he ill before?
Yes. Kompany had been fighting a viral infection for several weeks, according to several reports. He still led the team through a 6–1 win over RB Leipzig and the Arsenal draw. Some tests have come back, but Eberl said more are needed to find out exactly what caused Friday's collapse.
Who is in charge of Bayern now?
Kompany's assistant Aaron Danks takes charge of the team for now, with the rest of Kompany's coaching staff. Danks led Bayern before, when Kompany was suspended for a Champions League semi-final against PSG in April.
Bayern considered asking for Sunday's league match away at Freiburg to be postponed, but decided to play. Eberl said the best thing for Kompany was for the team "to play and be successful."
Who is Vincent Kompany?
- Born: 10 April 1986 in Brussels, Belgium.
- As a player: a commanding centre-back who captained Manchester City for most of a decade, winning four Premier League titles, and captained Belgium.
- As a coach: led Anderlecht, then took Burnley back to the Premier League as Championship winners in 2023. Bayern hired him in 2024, and he won the Bundesliga in his first season.
What happens next
Kompany stays in hospital until the tests are complete. Bayern have promised updates, and there is no timeline for his return. Until then, Danks runs the team.
